Scents & Sensibility For Summer With Yosh!

Posted on 07/10/2012

Shop the full Yosh perfume collection here!

Perfumer Yosh joins us again for another round of Scents & Sensibility! Spring has passed and now summer is truly in bloom. The earthy aromas of the season are in full swing like jasmine that seems it's most intoxicating at sunset, freshly mowed green grass, sweet honeysuckle and a day at the beach (cotton candy, coconut cocktails, sunscreen) and all! Yosh answers a few of our seasonal questions and recommends some great summer scents for our 2012 Summer Fragrance Flight, a sampler set of 5 fragrances for $15 that will leave you smelling great as the temperature rises. It also includes a special 20% discount code** that can be used just in case you find your new signature!

What differentiates summer style perfumes from the other seasons?

Our body chemistry (as well as the Earth's) changes during the summer. It's warmer out so we change our activities accordingly. When it's hot and humid, light and fresh fragrances tend to be more suitable for the season. Fruity florals or citrus aromatics are refreshing and carefree.

How do we choose the perfect summer fragrance?

This depends on your activity but for the office, something watery and subtle would be appropriate but weekends and going out at night, something sparkly and juicy would be more fun.

I've heard that eau de toilette can be a better choice than an eau de parfum because they're lighter based. However, the lighter they are I find the more times I have to apply. What's the solution?

There's a misconception that fragrances should last all day but I prefer to carry a purse spray to spritz throughout the day. It's like asking the sunlight to stay the same from morning through the day. Nobody is that robotic. Clothing gets wrinkled and worn as you sit and walk around. Refresh your fragrance when you powder your nose and add fresh coat of lipstick.

Eau de toilette EDT and eau de parfum EDP refer to the strength of perfume concentrate and alcohol. There's more alcohol and less concentrate in EDT so the dilution gives the wearer a lighter impression. I think this is a great solution if a person tends towards the heavier florientals or gourmands normally. Then you can still enjoy this genre of fragrance in the summer rather than trying to wear a different style of perfume. But if you like cologne style aromatics or citrus fragrances, then EDP is fine even in the summer. If you like floral musks or powdery fragrances, then choose the less intense EDT otherwise, it can be cloying in humid weather. If it's a dry climate with coastal breeze (west coast) then EDP is fine.

What are some of our summer inspired fragrances that have caught your eye this season?

In my own collection, I was surprised to find that I fell in love with U4EAHH. Even though it's a global best seller, it was one of my creations that I never wore because it is usually turns sour on me. But I've been in Tokyo for the last few weeks and the climate here is quite humid and the fragrance smells amazing on me. The new Rodin olio lusso Perfume also sounds amazing to me with neroli and jasmine.

Scents & Sensibility For Winter With Yosh!

Posted on 09/27/2012

Along with the colder season comes a seasonal closet overhaul and replacement of sandals and lightweight dresses for trendy rubber goulashes and cashmere sweaters, a change up in our skincare routine to soothe skin experiencing a brisker environment, and foregoing our floral fragrance for something a little more….chocolatey? Yes indeed, with the change in season comes a need for a complimentary fragrance. Our goal is to help you find it in our Fragrance Flight Vol. 2, a bespoke collection of 6 fragrance samples selected by perfumer Yosh, whose smoky and oriental scents are guaranteed to raise your body heat this winter. An exclusive 20% coupon code* is also included in case you find your new signature!

Every season we look forward to Yosh's insight into what will be on trend as well as answers to questions only one of the best 'noses' in the industry would know. We hope you enjoy another round of 'Scents & Sensibility' with Yosh!

What should you consider before you begin looking for a new fall/winter perfume, to make sure you pick the one that's right for you?

Normally, I would say that one might consider their climate first. I live in a place where winter is very mild so I prefer to wear a yummy fragrance with a little bit of smokiness but if you live in a climate where you have to wear a proper coat, gloves, scarves, then something more enveloping and warming might be better. This year, I'm going to pick my fall / winter fragrance based more on the kind of statement I'd like to project. I feel rather embolden now because I've lost a bit of weight and my hairdresser and I have come to agree on my look - more rock star glam. So for me, personally, I'm going to wear a fragrance that reflects an edgy opulence.

What aromas will be on trend this fall/winter?

Oud will continue to trend but creamy woody notes will make us feel grounded yet luxurious. Energetically, when people feel unstable, people choose more comfort fragrances. During the holidays, people tend to be a little emotional so something that makes us feel taken care of is how we want to smell. Vanilla will always be a great fall/winter choice for people. But I think people will want a little naughty vanilla - something with leather and spice.

Does the cold weather affect the way we wear our fragrance?

Absolutely ! Some people live in a climate zone that's mild in the winter. They might not need to wear something as heavy and spicy as a person living in very cold temperatures who might want something to feel like a warm cashmere wrap. In the winter, boozy fragrances make us feel warm inside too.

I recently heard that the perfume wearing tradition of rubbing your wrists together after application can destroy the scents quality. As a chronic wrist rubber I have to  hear straight from the perfumer's mouth if this is true?

I think people in the industry are divided on this one. I personally like to rub the wrists together to release the scent - like rubbing petals or leaves together.

Can selecting the wrong perfume age you?

Gosh - great question. I think perfumes can age you in both directions. Just like tight jeans and short skirts. Some fragrances tend to be more youthful whereas some fragrances are more mature. I find young teens wearing heavy perfumes trying to be more sophisticated and some cougars wearing shocking or to fruity scents because they don't care what is age appropriate.
