Mason Pearson Popular Mix Brush Seen In In Style!

Posted on 02/09/2012

If you're like me and using the same brush (Garnier) since high school, (clearly you can see hair brushes is not where I invest my beauty cash flow), then might I suggest a brand that has a huge following, Mason Pearson. This brand dates back to 1920 and is still going strong thanks to their exquisite design of handmade brushes that won't pull or damage the hair shaft. It was recently featured in March's In Style magazine as part of a series of hair products to get full and bouncy hair as seen on the runway models at the Versace show.

The Popular Mix Brush and Tail Comb was used in Step 3 of the look to brush through curls and tease the crown to create that full sexy-bombshell hair the Versace woman is so known for. No Mason Pearson brush will stear you wrong and they have a large assortment of different size brushes that all have a cushion made of natural rubber that allow the bristles to conform to the shape of the head and the premium boar bristles creates circulation of blood to the hair follicles which polishes the cuticle and results in increased shine! If you're staring in horror like I was at my old brush, then perhaps it's time to invest in a brand that will remain timeless and always get the job done!

Hollywood Tastemakers Favorite Things

Posted on 02/28/2012

Hollywood hairstylist Adir Abergel amongst other beauty tastemakers gathered their "favorite things" they swear by in March's Allure magazine. Adir likes to keep his styling kit neat and meticulously organized so he only wants the items that will get the job done fast and efficiently. A couple of his must-have items include a Mason Pearson brush to "leave a beatiful finish for straight hair" and Frederic Fekkai's Sheer Hold Hairspray because it "doesn't matte the hair and leaves a nice finish that you can still run your fingers through." Makeup artist Kate Lee mentioned her current essentials as well such as Kevyn Aucoin's Shading and Contouring Powder. Although she considers it a professional tool it really helps to create depth and dimension around the eye socket, cheekbones and jawline. There you have it, picks from the pros!

Mason Pearson's Popular Mixture Hair Brush

Posted on 03/20/2012

The key to gorgeous hair is part genetics, part amazing colorist and part…..brush? For most of us our brushes are an item we don't hold much value with. Yes, they detangle our hair but I'd always personally thought my investment should be in great haircare products over brushes or combs. How wrong I was! After 12 years of using my cheap Garnier brush it was ready to retire to the bottom of a garbage can and I'm now the proud owner of a Mason Pearson Popular Mixture hairbrush. After seeing it mentioned in countless magazines as well as knowing this brand has a history spanning decades in the hair industry, I can see first hand how investing some money in a great brush will greatly improve the overall health of our hair, not to mention bring out a shine like no other.

Mason Pearson's Popular Mixture Brush works for normal to the thickest of hair types and is ideal for cleaning and styling your mane. The brush features boar bristle and nylon tuffs  as well as a rubber cushion pad that is designed to massage the scalp. The ultimate in comfort as well as the ultimate in creating shine can be found in this brand that has street cred dating back to 1885.

Bringing Back the Art of the Shave

Posted on 06/26/2012

Check out Bvlgari Cologne here.

Dear b-glowing fashionistas: Today’s post is for the men in your life. Like cigars and martinis, the barbershop-style shave is back as one of the top grooming trends for men. Guys like to be pampered, and few refuse the treat of a sitting in a vintage barber chair for a hot towel, warm cream and straight razor. With the right tools, the effects of a great shave can last twice as long using a disposable razor in the shower.

Tips for Guys: The Ultimate Close Shave

Start warm. The best time to shave is just after a shower because the steam and moisture make the coarse hairs on your face plump and soft and the pores on your face open. An alternative to a shower is placing a hot, moist towel on your face for 10 minutes.

Exfoliate. Not just for girls, an exfoliating face wash will help open your pores, cleanse impurities in your skin, prime the hair follicles and raise the stubble on your face. Furthermore, exfoliating will help prevent the occurrence of ingrown hairs on your face and neck, which can appear as acne.

Actress Jennifer Connelly Shares Her Minimalist Beauty Secrets

Posted on 11/13/2012

I look through a lot of fashion magazines on a day to day basis and every so often I get the overwhelming feeling of dejavu.  That was definitely the case as I was flipping through the latest Elle edition and came across an article on actress Jennifer Connelly sharing her beauty secrets and product essentials. To me,  Jennifer is the epitome of a natural beauty. She has the perfect full brows and her eyes are so hauntingly beautiful she doesn't need a lot of makeup as they are their own showcase.

In the article, Jennifer says her beauty approach is pretty minimal and she normally finds new products when working with trusted makeup artist Judy Chin. A couple of her go to favorites, and my reason for deja-vu, is that she swears by Rosebud Salve and Mason Pearson hairbrushes. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised as this duo has been talked about by numerous celebrities, probably because both brands have been around for so long that they've built a trust with their customers. Jennifer loves Rosebud Salve for moisturized, high impact lips and a Mason Pearson brush to keep her glossy and shiny. With a face like that, even the most minimal additions make her look more beautiful!

Take Some Advice From The Beauty Experts!

Posted on 04/03/2013

Beauty experts are given that title for a very specific reason. With years of experience within the industry they've been able to develop a reputation for beautiful results and their word is like gospel. This month in Elle magazine the 2013 Genius Awards were announced compiling the best in hair, makeup and skincare revealing the products they can't be without. So listen up beauty junkies, if you're on the lookout for a great brush or hair product bypass all the lemons and go straight for these proven staples!

Hair stylist Ben Skervin swears by Mason Pearson's Nylon & Boar Bristle Brush to 'create good tension for a smooth blow-out.' Their brushes will literally last you a lifetime and you don't have to worry about a shine spray since their special bristles will spread sebum evenly over the hair strands.

A Nuxe Paris best seller and staff favorite, makeup artist Nicolas Degennes loves to apply Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Dry Oil Golden Shimmer to the décolleté for a healthy sheen. Tiny mother of pearl particles rest on the skin and give off a subtle sheen when sunlight is reflected off of it. It also enhances your summer tan!

It seems like the pros are all about oils just like we are. Bobbi Brown pays just as much attention to her hair as she does to her makeup line so when it needs some TLC she swears by Leonor Greyl's Huile de Palme because 'nothing makes hair as shiny.' Made with natural oils, this mane saver detangles, softens and adds a lustrous sheen with just a few drops!

Style How-To: Sleek Ponytail

Posted on 04/25/2013

Shop Hair here.

Sleek hair is all the rage this season, and from what we saw at Fashion Week for fall/winter, this trend is not going away. One of our favorite sleek looks, that has withstood the test of time, is a pony tail.

We love a pretty pony because it's work-appropriate, great for all textures - including fine hair - and a great way to get a second day out of your already-styled hair. Ready to rock this runway-ready revolution? Here are step-by-step instructions for this easy up-do, and the products that will get you there.

1. Prep Your Mane
You perfected your hair for work yesterday, but 24 hours later it's looking a little … sad. Use Mason Pearson's Handy Mixture Bristle & Nylon Brush to detangle and soften your locks, in preparation for your pony.

2. Tame Your Tail
Run T3's Single Pass 1" Flat Iron over your ends and address any noticeable kinks in your 'do. Don't spend too much time on this step, as the majority of your locks will be gathered and unseen. One minute tops!

3. Smooth Your Strands
Add a couple drops of Mixed Chicks Hair Silk from root to tip. This light reflecting serum not only tames fly-aways, it also gives you the added shine and vibrancy this sleek look requires.

4. Repair Your Hair
One of the things we love about a sleek pony is that is allows you to throw on a treatment or leave-in conditioner to repair hair while it's up. We recommend klorane's Leave-In with Mango Butter. It prevents further breakage and repairs without weighing hair down. Concentrate this product at the ends of your hair to keep the 'tail' of your pony streamlined.

4. Flipping Out
Flip hair upside down, brushing repeatedly from root to tip toward the floor. Make a fist, and place it against the top of your head, this is where your pony will 'sprout' from.

5. Gather the Herd
Open your fist and begin brushing your hair into it, collecting it for the hair tie. Depending on hair length, you may have to move your fist towards the nape of your neck, in order to collect all your stands in the tie.

6. Rein It In
Using the hair tie of your choice, secure your now-collected hair. You may choose to leave the tie as-is, or you can create a more polished look by wrapping a thin segment of hair from your tail around the tie and securing it with a bobby pin towards the underside of your ponytail.

7. Polish the Pony
Now that your pony is in place, you'll want to tame baby hairs and frizz. Use GLOSS Moderne High-Gloss Serum along the hairline and sides to perfect your sleek look, enhance shine and tame fly-aways.

8. Solidify Your Style
Finish off this look with a pass of your favorite hairspray. We recommend Serge Normant Meta Luxe Hairspray to ensure hold and protect hair against damaging and dulling UV rays.

We hope you enjoy this styling 'how-to' from b-glowing.com!

Staff Holiday 2012 Gift Picks - Kelsey

Posted on 11/21/2012

Everyone needs a little help navigating the wealth of fantastic beauty products b-glowing has to offer and who better to give you some giftable suggestions then our b-glowing elf (or inventory manager) Kelsey! She has a classic, sophisticated taste and doesn't mind splurging on skincare when she knows the results are going to be worth it. Here are three of the items she has her eye on this Christmas:

Kels wants to keep her mane in tip-top shape with the help of a Popular Mason Pearson Brush. Although a brush isn't something she would necessarily buy for herself, if she did receive it she knows she would use it the rest of her life. Mason Pearson brushes are so well made they're designed to strengthen and protect the hair by transferring sebum from the root along the hair strand. This translates to healthy and shiny hair like you've never seen before.

Kelsey is always changing up nail lacquers and lipstick shades so she loves the 2-for-1 you get with Butter London's Lips & Tips. She has her eye on Yummy Mummy because both the medium beige lacquer and matching lippy are the perfect shade for anytime of year. Nude goes with any outfit so there's no need to switch up nail polishes if your outfit colors change up throughout the week.

If you're going to splurge you can't go wrong with a Clarisonic. Although Kels is in her mid 20's, it's never to early to start taking great care of your skin which is why she would love the Clarisonic Opal in Black! According to her, she needs to start 'ramping up my anti-aging regimen and under eye is the place to start!' The Opal is a delivery system that uses sonic infusion to penetrate into eye creases and infuse an age fighting sea serum to plump and refine the area.

Stay tuned for more staff picks to help make holiday shopping a little more helpful and fun!

T3 Singlepass Whirl Curling Wand

Find Your Hair Brush

Posted on 02/04/2014

Shop b-glowing.

With so many different hair brushes to choose from, it can be difficult to know which one your hair needs. We’re here to help! Learn about a few of the most standard brushes and which ones will work for your tresses.

Paddle Brush – This brush is great for all hair types and is used to either regularly brush the hair with ease or for heat styling. If you blow dry, but do not need a lot of style assistance, the Paddle brush is great for guiding the hair during drying, keeping hair in order and the cuticle smoothed while applying heat. The wide bristles also make it ideal for getting through wet hair with less drag and damage than other brushes with more bristles. Try this Paddle Brush from Mixed Chicks.

Round Brush- This handy brush is used mostly with heat styling but can also be used on dry hair to achieve a rounded or soft look. A round brush, when used on wet hair with a dryer, works to pull wave or kink out of hair’s texture, and will also help smooth the cuticle for a polished look. While the round brush will relax the texture of your hair, you can still create roller-like body by using the cool shot button on your dryer while hair is wrapped around the barrel of the brush.

Varying lengths in hair will also call for different diameters of the brush barrel. With all great beauty tools, practice makes perfect, and round brushing definitely takes a little practice! Try this Round Brush from Philip B.

Boar Bristle Brush – This brush is great for all hair types but especially those with finer, more delicate hair because the bristles pull smoothly to cause less damage and breakage. Boar bristles also work to distribute the scalp’s natural oils evenly through the hair to ends, resulting in healthy ends and less oily roots. They’re also great for smoothing and styling updos since the bristles are close together and soft enough to lay the hair down but not disrupt the style. Try this Boar Bristle Brush from Mason Pearson.

Wide Tooth Comb – You should absolutely have a great comb in your arsenal for detangling purposes. While the most natural instinct with a tangled patch of hair is to mercilessly attack it with any brush in arms reach, vow to take a little more time with your misunderstood mane. When using a wide tooth comb to detangle, start at the bottom of the tangle and working your way up. If you are trying to comb down through the tangle you won’t make much progress and will only push the knots down, causing more damage. So remember, bottoms up! We also recommend keeping one in the shower to help dispense conditioners appropriately to all your ends. Try this Wide Tooth Comb from Mason Pearson.

Take Your Hair to New Lengths

Posted on 03/19/2014

A guide to longer and healthier hair

You know your hair is growing, but does it seem like it isn’t getting any longer? You may be right, and the answer could lay in your hair care routine. Excessive heat styling, friction styling, and your nutrition can all be factors in causing brittle, damaged hair that is prone to breakage. Here are some pro-tips to maintain your length.

Your Hair’s Integrity
It’s important to know how much your hair can handle and how you can give back to your locks. If you have chemically treated hair, especially if it has been lightened with bleach, its integrity is already compromised. If you are also doing a lot of heat styling (i.e. round brush blowouts, flat irons, curling irons) you need to be careful about how often you are doing this. Firstly, use a heat protectant whenever heat is applied to the hair. Try to limit blowouts and heat styling to no more than twice a week (ideally only once a week). You should also be doing a weekly hair mask to strengthen and maintain protein levels.

Friction/Styling
A lot of breakage can occur during regular styling (like pony tails or buns and braids) because the hair is being pulled and manipulated by elastic bands and hair pins. Try switching your style, and don’t wear your pony tail or buns in the same place all the time. This will avoid stressing the same hairs over and over, which can lead to, you guessed it, breakage.

Plus, tossing and turning in your sleep against cotton pillowcases can cause your hair to get stuck and snap off, so we also recommend a silk pillowcase.

Washing
Too many washes can dry your hair, making it brittle and frizzy, which typically drives people to more heat styling. Everyone’s hair is different, but we suggest no more than three washes in a 7-day period (two is ideal for most hair types). We know it can be tough, but with a good dry shampoo by your side, you can keep your hair looking refreshed rather than oily.

Nutrition
Your diet affects your overall health, including the health of your hair and nails. Once you have a routine to keep your ends happy, it’s smart to maintain healthy hair growth. Vitamin- and iron-rich foods, such as blueberries, spinach, and salmon can aide in the regulation of your hair cycles. Adding a supplement with biotin can also give hair growth a boost.
