As per usual, Zooey Deschanel had some of the best nails on the red carpet at this year’s Golden Globes, which gave us some serious nail inspiration. We loved the femininity and simplicity of her nails, plus the added glamour of the gold, so our resident nail artist got to work on a Zooey D-style mani.
Step 1: Apply Your Base
Always start with clean, buffed nails, and apply a base coat for mani longevity, and to protect your nails. We used a sheer beige/pink base to keep the nail look natural and clean. For this we used Tenoverten’s Houston. Two coats will do just fine, and don’t worry about slight transparency.
Step 2: Dots
Once the base color dried for about 5 minutes, we added our gold dots for the centers of the daisies. The tip of the polish brush is quite perfect for making the small, slightly raised dots. Just a few dabs on the nail with the brush will give the desired effect. Make sure to spread them out so you have room to paint the petals of the daisies.
For this we used Lushington, new from butter LONDON’s Boho Rock Collection. Zooey’s manicure has bigger and fewer daises, but we opted for a smaller flower. The choice is yours! These will take longer to completely dry, but after a few minutes you can move on to your next step.
Step 3: Petals
To create the petals we used a small pointed nail brush. For those of you without these tools around, a steady hand and the tip of a bobby pin will work, too. We chose a light blue, instead of white, just to add a pop of color; we used Blue Orchid from Deborah Lippmann’s spring 2014 line.
The easiest way to dip your brush into the polish is to pour a small amount onto a dish. Starting from the gold dot, lightly drag the brush with your petal polish outward. Try to keep them the same length, and don’t crowd too many petals on one dot. Your brush will start to accumulate polish, so be sure to wipe the brush periodically.
Step 4: Gloss
Give your mani sufficient time to dry before applying your top coat—a good 15 minutes, just to be safe. Once dry, apply a top coat of your choice to seal the look and create a high shine. Now you, too, have sweet and sophisticated red carpet nails!
