Take Your Hair to New Lengths

Posted on 03/19/2014

A guide to longer and healthier hair

You know your hair is growing, but does it seem like it isn’t getting any longer? You may be right, and the answer could lay in your hair care routine. Excessive heat styling, friction styling, and your nutrition can all be factors in causing brittle, damaged hair that is prone to breakage. Here are some pro-tips to maintain your length.

Your Hair’s Integrity
It’s important to know how much your hair can handle and how you can give back to your locks. If you have chemically treated hair, especially if it has been lightened with bleach, its integrity is already compromised. If you are also doing a lot of heat styling (i.e. round brush blowouts, flat irons, curling irons) you need to be careful about how often you are doing this. Firstly, use a heat protectant whenever heat is applied to the hair. Try to limit blowouts and heat styling to no more than twice a week (ideally only once a week). You should also be doing a weekly hair mask to strengthen and maintain protein levels.

Friction/Styling
A lot of breakage can occur during regular styling (like pony tails or buns and braids) because the hair is being pulled and manipulated by elastic bands and hair pins. Try switching your style, and don’t wear your pony tail or buns in the same place all the time. This will avoid stressing the same hairs over and over, which can lead to, you guessed it, breakage.

Plus, tossing and turning in your sleep against cotton pillowcases can cause your hair to get stuck and snap off, so we also recommend a silk pillowcase.

Washing
Too many washes can dry your hair, making it brittle and frizzy, which typically drives people to more heat styling. Everyone’s hair is different, but we suggest no more than three washes in a 7-day period (two is ideal for most hair types). We know it can be tough, but with a good dry shampoo by your side, you can keep your hair looking refreshed rather than oily.

Nutrition
Your diet affects your overall health, including the health of your hair and nails. Once you have a routine to keep your ends happy, it’s smart to maintain healthy hair growth. Vitamin- and iron-rich foods, such as blueberries, spinach, and salmon can aide in the regulation of your hair cycles. Adding a supplement with biotin can also give hair growth a boost.
