Happy Birthday, Virgo!

Let’s face it, Virgo—you’re loyal, kind, and hardworking—but above all else, you’re practical, analytical, and organized. So it should be no surprise that we’re giving you a beauty horoscope with ways to clean, organize, and elevate your beauty routine. From expired makeup, to pesky brush buildup, and even ways to store your prettiest palettes—we think these tidying tips will surely spark joy.

Makeup Expiration: When to Toss It

Given the price of some products, the idea of throwing away makeup can be a painful one. Alternatively, makeup can easily trap bacteria, resulting in skin irritation, breakouts, and in more serious cases infections. Most makeup products last between one to two years with one glaring exception—mascara and eyeliner. These eye enhancing staples should be tossed or replaced every three months to avoid eye irritation or eye infection. And sharing these products is a huge no-no for preventing germs.

As for the rest of your makeup arsenal, key indicators such as smell, separation, and changes in texture are telltale signs a product has gone bad. While some makeup products have expiration dates printed on them, many do not—which means it’s up to you, Virgo, to be diligent about old, possibly bad makeup.

Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes + Sponges

More so than makeup, beauty brushes and sponges are hotbeds for bacteria and even fungal growth. We’ve been told this dozens of times and yet it’s still something that is far too frequently avoided or forgotten. Luckily, there are a few foolproof products that can make cleaning brushes and sponges easier.

For makeup brushes that take the brunt of the work, try Sigma Beauty SigMagic Scrub. The two-in-one cleanser removes buildup while the silicone nodules help to scrub away tough stains. For a quick clean between products, we love Beauty Blender InstaClean™. This waterless cleansing spray refreshes and removes surface stains from sponges and brushes. The formula dries quickly so your beauty tools won’t need much downtime.

Pro Tip: Don’t let buildup takeover when you’re on-the-go—Artis Brush Cleansing Wipes instantly remove makeup from brushes and sponges and come in a perfectly packable, travel-friendly pouch.

Organizing Your Makeup

We love makeup and we’ll be the first ones to admit we enjoy treating ourselves to a new eyeshadow palette or limited-edition lipstick from time to time. But when makeup starts to pile up in drawers or on countertops, it’s time to implement a little organization. Start by identifying which products are A. “core” everyday use, and which items are B. special occasion or limited use.

We like keeping the A group items in a small, travel-friendly makeup bag that’s easy to take on-the-go. For the B group, store these items in an air-tight kaboodle or on shelves in a cool dry place. If you have standout skincare products or eye-catching makeup, display these pieces on your vanity or on open shelves where you get ready. These should ‘spark joy’ when you see them and add a feminine touch to your space. One of our favorites is the b-glowing BEAUTY Illuminate + Shine Palette.
