Eyebrow Tutorial: How To Shape, Fill, Highlight and Tame

Here to help you create the most alluring and fierce brows in town, we’ve plucked tips from brow-obsessed babes in the office. Learn how to shape, fill, highlight and tame to achieve the look of Queens d'brow we bow to: Audrey Hepburn (devotees always and forever), Cara Delevingne, Rihanna and Lily Collins.

Here’s a way to shape your brows or get them back to a natural state after over-plucking (Friendly reminder: put. the. tweezers. down.)

How to create an eyebrow shape

Pretend your face is kind of like a sundial, and use an eyebrow brush to make 3 key marks on your brow. This trick will help you determine where your brow begins, where your arch is, and where the tail end is.

The Brow Begins Here

Point up towards 12 o’clock

From the side of the tip of your nostril (not from the outside of your nose), point the brush upwards to define the beginning of your eyebrow.

Know Where Your Arch Is

Point towards 1 o’clock

Start again from the side of the tip of your nostril, and using a slanted brush, point from the tip of your nose through your pupil to the eyebrow. You’ve found your arch!

The Tail of Your Eyebrow

Point towards 2 o’clock

To find the end of your eyebrow (AKA the tail), point the brush from the corner of your nostril to the outer corner of your eye.

You’ve just marked the only 3 points needed to begin creating eyebrow gorgeousness.

To Salon or Stencil…

Getting your shape done at a salon is highly recommended. But if you'd prefer to not hand over your brows to a highly trained stranger, try the Anastasia Beverly Hills Stencils. Petite, Slim High, Medium, High and Full Arch Stencils will help you maintain a true Anastasia shape at home.

A bad wax so you're growing your hairs back in? A major plucking session? No problem. You can easily help your brows get in-step with their natural state. Find our top product picks below.

Cult favorite Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz is a must-have for defining brows and making ’em super clean. Lining the brows is simple. First, underline the bottom of your brow (starting in the middle) and lead the pencil through the rest of the underbrow to the end. Then overline your brow—start at the arch, and then move outward, using a lighter touch towards the end. Finally, move the pencil forward, lining both the top and the bottom.

Next step: go into the brow and draw false hairs. We like Brow Wiz for this. For a super natural look, we’ve had success with IT CosmeticsYBBB Your Brows but Better Brow Powder Skinny Pencil because it’s great at mimicking the look of actual brow hair.

To diffuse lines you’ve created inside the brow, the stiffness of the Brow Wiz Spooley Brush is great. Brush upward going inside the brow, combing the product through the hairs. Then go the opposite way and outward, so that the brow pigment gets on your skin.

Highlighting takes your brow power to the next level. It adds the final touch and completes your look, just like putting on your favorite piece of jewelry makes your 70’s-inspired-night-on-the-town-pantsuit pop.

The fine art of light and shade is all yours with Sigma Beauty’s Brow Highlighting Pencil; it perfectly accentuates the brow bone and defines the brow’s arch. It CosmeticsBrow Power Lift is a win-win: it offers both matte and pearl. Help open the brow and lift with a dewy finish with the pearl side and use the matte side if you’re wanting to open the area but are seeking a natural look without any shimmer. We also recommend STUDIO | 10’s  Brow Visible Lift / Perfecting Liner because it easily defines and frames your face. Apply the nude tone along the brow bone. With this product, we recommend you use light strokes and don’t press so hard that you see the actual lines. The natural powder finish creates a flawless look.

Similar to putting gel in your hair, Anastasia Beverly Hills Beauty Genius Clear Waterproofing Gel is a waterproof and smudgeproof gel that coats and sets your brow in place. Use the wonder-wand to brush through the hairs, combing upwards and then sideways and over the tail.

Dual Purpose Faves

DIPBROW by Anastasia Beverly Hills is the holy grail of brow fillers, an epic multi-tasker.

It is almost like a gel eyeliner, but not as creamy. All you need to do is tap your brush in (we love Brush #12) and get just a little bit on the brush, to not create a harsh-looking brow. Start by filling in the arch, if they’re sparse. Use short and gentle brush strokes. It stays and lasts all day long, so you won’t have to touch up your eye-babes.

If you’re seeking to create tiny brow hairs where there are none or accentuate and sculpt a full arch, Laura Geller Beauty’s Brow Sculpting Marker is your go-to. WUNDER2 WUNDERBROW is a one-step solution to eyebrow shape and hair loss. All you do is paint it on top of the brows you have, and let the exclusive blend of hair-like fibers, combined with specially treated pigments do their magic and fasten onto your skin and hair for a fuller looks. There’s a small brush similar to a mascara brush thats excellent for brushing the brows into a smooth finish.

Oh, and last but never least is the Eyeko Brow Gel, a fab little multi-tasker that effortlessly defines brows for long-lasting hold with a natural finish.
