We’d love to know what inspired you to write Lessons of a Lipstick Queen: Finding and Developing the Great Idea that Can Change your Life. How did writing the book change your life?

I wanted to demystify what it takes to be an entrepreneur. We are all much more entrepreneurial than we think. We all have ideas. It’s just taking consistent, regular action that makes one person an entrepreneur and another a dreamer. Dreams are just ideas without action but ideas you take action on are the essence of entrepreneurship.

We’ve heard you say lipstick is empowering. Why does lipstick make us feel so amazing?

It’s like a super-hero cape. There is something that connects you to an inner sense of female power that makes you feel capable of doing more.

We read an amazing description from you about the difference between glamour and beauty in Into The Gloss. Tell us more about Madeleine Albright and glamour! Your perspective is so b-glowing!

What I meant by this is that glamour is not so much about age, physicality or style, but about spirit. It is a mind-body connection where your spirit shows through and very small actions such as wearing a wonderful brooch every day, as in the case of Madeline Albright, is such a simple, spirited and glamorous action.

What's your advice for female entrepreneurs or young women entering college or the workplace?

Don’t ever think you need anyone’s permission to go for it. The only person whose permission you need is yours. Reaching for success involves much trial and error and that's ok. You don’t need to be perfect, you just need to keep trying to push past your doubts and find the path.

What quote do you return to again and again for inspiration?

There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.

How would you define innovation?

Connecting people to their imagination.

Oooh! Love. Tell us more: “Lipstick is to women what sportscars are to men.”

Pretty much all men get mesmerized by sports cars but they aren’t sure they have the confidence to drive one. I have noticed that is how women can be about lipstick: mesmerized but not sure they could pull it offwhen they can if they just get used to seeing themselves in it.

We’d love to hear more from you on the idea of being a “saint” or “sinner.” How does good vs. bad play out in life, and in the beauty industry? Are you a saint or a sinner? 😉

We all struggle with what we judge to be good and bad, whether it’s on the inside or out. But the more you can let go of this and accept that we all have both, the more you can grow and reach without stifling yourself with judgement. I included Saints and Sinners in the line as way of allowing us to be both.

We understand that “the dark sensuality within us all” was an inspiration when creating your new line, BÊTE NOIRE (translation: Black Beast). We’d love to hear more about how embracing our dark side has inspired you!

Inspired by our own dark side we can come to a deeper understanding of ourselves. This collection is about the beauty in that. The things we run away from, the parts we don’t like, are often what we need to face in order to be able to move on from them.

What are your 4 fave items right now?

Leg warmersit’s freezing in NYC.

Clip-on earringsI love the Mad Men-esque look of them.

Ice creammy favorite dessert.

Dogsthey make me feel like the world is a fun place.

What are the 5 life rituals you do daily to stay happy and healthy?

Friends, exercise, hydrate, Manhattan skyline, red lipstick.

What song is on repeat in your playlist right now?

Anything by Prince.

What blog, Instagram account or Tumblr do you covet the most?

I don’t really partake in this stuff. I still prefer an old fashioned book. : )

How would you describe your personal style? What are some of your favorite wardrobe pieces in your closet?

My style is modern vintage. I mix vintage pieces with modern pieces but all of them have a strong femininity that is tailored but fun. I am loving an Alaia dress I bought on sale in Paris that is leopard print and a jacket from Zara that is so warm and cozy.

What is a typical day in the life of POPPY KING?

I wake up at 7am, have some coffee and answer emails.

Shower and get dressed then have a breakfast bowl of cereal or fruit.

More emails.

Outside meetings with vendors and product development work on new lipsticks, packaging and color ideas.

More emails.

Lunch is usually salad then more meetings with work colleagues on planning for upcoming products, press requests.

Coffee and something sweet in the afternoon.

More emails!

Gym for an hour.

Meet with friends for dinner or an art opening or cuddle up on the couch for great TV.

What is THE lipstick trend of 2015? Tell us everything.

Wine colored lipstick is the new red. It’s best to apply straight from the tube and blot to make it last and then apply another coat so that the undercoat stays on.

Apply the wine colored lipstick before you do your eye makeup so that way you won’t make the eye makeup too heavy. This makes the look super chic and fresh when you wear just a tad less eye makeup with it.

What are your top beauty picks on b-glowing.com?

EVE LOM Cleanser – I love the ritual involved with using this product, it always feels so indulgent.

Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer – when I feel like my skin needs a little more cover than usual this really does the trick.

Kevyn Aucoin Precision Brow Pencil – I love how fine the pencil is on this.

LATHER Pumice Stone – it’s really important to look after your feet because they work so hard for us. I use this on the soles of my feet in the shower and then I massage oil in afterwards.

Le Couvent des Minimes Energizing Shower Gel in Verbena and Lemon – I love an invigorating shower in the morning and I find citrus really does revitalise the mind and body and gets you ready for the day.

EVE LOM Rescue Mask – it’s always really rewarding to see the difference a good face mask can make to your complexion.

EVE LOM Eye Cream – I like how this feels nourishing without being heavy.

Eyeko Black Magic Mascara – I prefer non-waterproof and more natural-looking mascaras that elongate, separate and define the lashes without making them look too caked in product.

Kerstin Florian Mineral Wellness Soak with Eucalyptus – to recover from a long flight or even if I’m just feeling a little run down, I like to wallow in the tub with this soothing and aromatic muscle soak.

Lulu Organics Jasmine Hair Powder – smells wonderful and the retro styling is charming.
