Shining on RHONY with her “keep it real and keep it moving” mentality, Heather Thomson embodies EVERYTHING an outstanding mentor and role model should: she’s an honest and amazingly savvy entrepreneur (her grace-under-fire calm is inspiring), she’s generous and has strong personal boundaries, and, most importantly, she’s a sister. As a loyal BFF, she lifts up those around her and is super positive, while never being a pushover. Go girl! 

We caught up with Heather for a pretty epic Q and A. Love her. She’s a rock star. 


Tell us about the inspiration for your amazing line yummie, a brand of wardrobe essentials. We love that you’re about dressing for confidence!

Like lots of new moms, I had to work at losing that baby weight. As I exercised and dieted, I also took a trip to the shapewear department looking for a boost of confidence. What I found was anything but confidence boosting though – they were literally my grandmother’s girdles. So I did what any good designer would do, I took off my consumer hat and put on my designer hat. I got out the sewing machine and went to work. That’s when my original yummie 3-panel patented tank was created and whole new way of looking at shapewear was born.


What does it take to build a brand and be a successful lady entrepreneur?

For any entrepreneur it’s important to set your own table, and not be looking for a seat at someone else’s. Don’t forget who you are and why you got into this. If you are going to be an entrepreneur, you must love what you do because it’s only work if there’s somewhere else you’d rather be. And, don’t be afraid of failure. You’re going to fail! I always say it’s only a mistake if you make it twice, the first time it’s a lesson.


The third month you launched yummie  you were discovered by Oprah and featured on her Favorite Things. Tell us about that moment! 

It was such an “ah ha!” moment. A mix of excitement and a dose of reality. One of the first things I did was contact previous brands that had been chosen to get advice on being featured. The most common theme was websites crashing, so this was a real catalyst for me to get my site up and running. Fortunately I was able to do this within three weeks and luckily we made it through with no issues!  We’ve been off and running every since!


What would be your #1 mentoring tip for female entrepreneurs, young girls in school, or women graduating from high school?

Take risks. Do your homework. Trust your gut. There’s a reason why people talk about a woman’s intuition. Trust that.  Even if sometimes things don’t make logical sense, if you really want something, then take a risk and go for It!

We saw this video on your YouTube page where you said, “Looking good is feeling good and feeling good is looking good.” We SO agree. Tell us more about this philosophy. 

Most importantly, when you feel good, you look good. When you feel good you exude confidence and an inner joy that can’t be replaced. It’s also really important that your clothes fit and are comfortable so that you’re free to feel great. 


What does authenticity mean to you and how is this idea expressed in your life?

It’s so important that we take the time to get to know ourselves and then live our lives as who we really are—our authentic selvesnot as someone we think our parents want us to be, or our bosses want us to be, or our friends, spouse or partner want us to be. I always say “Embrace your flaws as much as your features!” Keep it real, and keep it moving.



On RHONY, how do you keep sense of self in a group of strong personalities?

When I was working for Puffy he would always say “do you”, and this really showed me how to step into my power. So in a group of strong personalities, like the housewives, I’ve found it’s really important to stand up for your voice, and not compare yourself to anyone. I also try to be a good listener and stick to my core values. 


What does “holla” mean to you?

My success is built on making women look and feel their best. “Holla” naturally flowed out of me as a positive shout out to all the ladies who have been rockin' and lovin' my yummie products.


We are major fans of Beyoncé and know you’ve worked closely with her. Why do you think she is so beloved and what’s your favorite message she provides to women that you feel you stand for as well? 

One of the greatest lessons I learned from working with Beyoncé was humility.  Beyoncé is truly one of the nicest, kindest, most gracious women I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. In all business situations, no matter how stressful, she personified grace. Beyoncé loves what she does and works extremely hard at it. She’s driven, passionate and truly inspirational. 


Creativity and Innovation.

We are beyond excited to partner with you for our upcoming Beauty Bag. Tell us about the inspiration for the design of the bag. What’s your creative process?

I really wanted this bag to be functional, organized, and protective. I love the wide open mouth, allowing us to easily see all the must-haves in one place. My creative process is all about tying together fashion, function and personal need into the final product.



If you could have dinner and drinks with 3 female artists, icons, politicians, authors, etc. – who’s alive today or not, who would they be?

Gloria Steinem, Diana Vreeland, and Debbie Harry 


Who’s your playlist right now?

I’m a huge rock and roll fan so Led Zeppelin is always a must. I also have a lot of John Mayer, and Supertramp.

The Future

What’s next for you in your company and your life? What goals are you striving to manifest next?

I’m launching yummie Loungewear that you’ll be able to check out on yummielife.com starting 10/1.  I can’t wait for you to see it – this collection will offer versatile layers and a modern fit you’ll feel delicious in each piece! My new yummie active collection is also a really exciting launch – including leggings, tanks, bras and jackets – you look and feel your best as you move from point a to point b. Also, out now is new yummie by Heather Thomson Denim. These jeans are the product of smart and innovative design making each pair super flattering for all shapes and sizes! 

Personally, I am training to climb four fourteeners with No Barriers USA. I couldn’t be more excited for this!

Lastly, I’m studying at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a health and wellness coach. Health and wellness is a huge part of my life and this is such an exciting next step for me.
